Women’s football welcomes VCU to open exhibition season
It’s the first of two exhibition games for the Tar Heels, who are ranked No. 10 in the United Soccer Coaches pre-season poll. Carolina will host BYU, the 2021 NCAA Tournament finalist, ranked No. 3 in the preseason, in Chapel Hill on August 13.
Tar Heels bring back 10 players who started 11 or more games last season, led by second-team All-America defenseman Maycee Bell. Second year Emily Coltonan All-ACC Freshman Team and junior selection Avery Patterson also return after placing one and two in the squad by scoring a year ago, respectively.
Junior Sam Meza was an All-ACC Second Team and All-Region Second Team midfielder in 2021, scoring two goals and providing one assist in 16 games. She was one of eight players to play more than 970 minutes for the Heels last season.
Tar Heels return 24 winners, welcome nine true freshmen to team, plus returning redshirt freshman Ally Sentnorwho missed the entire 2021 season after suffering a season-ending injury in the exhibition game against UNCW.
Sentnor and junior Talia DellaPeruta are currently playing with the United States Women’s National Youth Team at the Under-20 World Cup in Costa Rica. The United States will open play against Ghana on August 11.
