Women’s football: Bieda’s overtime goal gives Macalester victory
Saint-Paul, Minnesota. – The Macalester College women’s soccer team played a conference game against Hamline on the road. The two teams were tied, but Macalester won 1-0.
The Scots wasted no time setting up early and often senior shots Alice bieda (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and Carolyn Eckstein (Bryn Mawr, PA / Radnor), junior Celia Lesmeister (Decorah, IA / Decorah) and second year Livi Novello (East Lansing, Michigan / East Lansing). The Scots continued to advance but were rejected by the Pipers.
In the second half, the Scots went on the attack again with a Lesmeister shot just four minutes from halftime. In the 57e, second year Ella Thomsen (Palo Alto, CA / Palo Alto) saw a shot saved by the Hamline goalkeeper. With both teams scoring no goals after 90 minutes, the game went into overtime. Bieda stepped in and put one in the back of the net in the 95e minute, on a junior assist Lily lorenzen (San Francisco, CA / San Francisco Urban School).
Senior goalkeeper, Dana gustafson (Ames, IA / Ames) made five big saves to keep Hamline scoreless. The Scots’ record is now 6-3-1 (2-3-0 MIAC). The Scots’ next game will be Wednesday, October 6 at 7:30 pm They will face the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at Macalester Stadium.
