Westmoreland High School Notebook: Jeannette’s Daughters Hoops Near Return
Saturday January 15, 2022 | 8:01
Jeannette’s girls’ basketball team hopes to return to the court soon after a week of quarantine.
The Jayhawks had to postpone three games and five practices after a few girls caught the flu and another tested positive for covid-19.
“We are very careful,” said Jeannette sporting director Adrian Batts.
Batts said the plan is for the team to return to practice on Monday.
“I think once we get through this week, everything will be fine. Coach (Bill) Flow is great with the girls. He will rectify the situation. I really believe in him as a coach.
Jeannette (0-9) is trying to crack a 31-game losing steak that dates back three seasons. The team has not played since January 6.
Morocco is closing
Derry senior basketball player Tiana Moracco needs three points to reach 1,000 points for her career and is 50 shy of the school record of 1,047 points set by Lindsay Dixon from 1999-2002.
Derry invited alumni and the community to attend Tuesday’s home game against Mt. Pleasant to watch Moracco continue his career milestone and continue to chase the record.
Moracco, a guard who scored more than half of Derry’s points, had a school-high 39 in a recent game against Deer Lakes.
Near the vest
The numbers are there for the personal effort of Penn-Trafford senior football player Jack Jollie to raise money for the Penn Township Police Department.
Jollie has raised an impressive $33,281 to help the department purchase bulletproof vests, which cost over $1,000 each and are often replaced every five years.
Jollie, a tight end who caught the touchdown pass in the Warriors’ 17-14 overtime win over Imhotep Charter in the Class 5A PIAA Championship, has made the fundraiser a senior project.
“I’m very proud of our Penn-Trafford police officers,” Jollie said. “They protect us. They do everything for us. They keep us safe.
Humbert set for the Big 33
Belle Vernon’s football coach, Matt Humbert, will be on staff for Team Pennsylvania for the Big 33 Classic taking place May 30 at Bishop McDevitt in Harrisburg.
Humbert will be the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the All-Star Game against Team Maryland.
Balance is what Humbert said he expects from the offense — at least initially.
“The goal is to be multifaceted so you have a bit of everything in these practices,” he said. “A lot of that will come down to what kind of kids we have and focusing more on what they will do best. You want to be universal in a lot of things to minimize setup time and make sure kids can pick up the basics quickly, so you can maximize your reps.
Humbert said he would try to incorporate some of Belle Vernon’s playbook, but would also benefit from another WPIAL assistant in the staff of Peters Township’s TJ Plack and the head coach of Pennsylvania John Franco of Tyrone.
Belle Vernon quarterback Devin Whitlock is expected to take a serious look at the Big 33. The rosters will be announced at a later date.
Latrobe freshman soccer player Robin Reilly, who plays the cup for the Riverhounds Academy, has been selected to attend the US Youth Soccer ODP National Training Camp which will take place January 27-30 in Tampa, Florida .
Jeannette’s football siblings, Jordan and Jorel Taylor, played for the PA West Futsal State Cup championship winning team as members of the Barbarian Futsal Club U16 squad.
Now, the brothers will compete in the national tournament next month in New Jersey.
Young sporting director Scott Morrison has been busy lately. That’s because he has three head coaching openings for fall sports.
Vacancies exist in women’s soccer, men’s soccer and women’s volleyball.
Norwin senior football player Dom Barca has received a preferred offer from Seton Hill. Barca played ball carrier and returned kicks for the Knights.
He is also one of the best hockey players in school.
• Penn-Trafford senior lineman Declan Ochendowski, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound offensive and defensive tackle, has received a Division II offer from Mercyhurst.
