“We had to write the story. We wrote it’

“It wasn’t work tonight, it was history. History had to be written. We wrote it.

Those are the words of Jose Mourinho after the AS Roma manager led them to their first continental trophy with a 1-0 win over Feyenoord in Wednesday’s UEFA Europa Conference League final.

Mourinho knows the finals, and he is now five to five between Porto, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Roma after adding the UECL crown to his two Europa League and two Champions League titles.

The former Chelsea and Tottenham boss was moved to tears after the win and then again in his first post-match interview, in which the 59-year-old said he would definitely be back for a second season with the club.

And why not? He joined Juventus legend Giovanni Trappatoni as the only manager to win five major European trophies.

The Special One is particularly proud to deliver for Roma

Mourinho said he felt at home, as he has at almost every stage since he first stunned the world by leading Porto to the European Cup.

“Of course I feel like a Romanista, but maybe that’s the way I work,” Mourinho said. “I’m a Porto fan, an Inter fan, a Chelsea fan, I’m crazy about Real Madrid, I’m now a Roma fan, I belong to all these clubs because we had these moments together…. Tonight, with all due respect to all the clubs I’ve worked for before, I’m 100% Romanista, because these fans are truly amazing.

He says he’s grateful to add a crown to another great historic club like Roma because it was a first for them.

“The great thing about my career is that apart from the Europa League with Manchester United, doing it with Porto, Inter and Roma is very, very, very special,” Mourinho said. “It’s one thing to win when everyone expects it, when you’ve made the investments to win, but it’s another thing to win when something remains immortal, that feels really special.

“I’m thinking of me, of course, but above all of the Roma fans who can celebrate tonight, have fun and remember this night forever.”
