âI was 4 when I started playing football. My parents always made jokes about how hard I kicked when I was a baby, so they hired me and my brother for football.
Enjoy the sport and the position the most
âMy favorite part of football is that it’s not tied to specific games on a whiteboard. It’s fluid and creative and the players on the pitch need to have some understanding of who they’re playing against to know how to play around them. I always wanted to score goals when I was younger, but I didn’t have the kicking skills to dribble and beat defenders. I discovered that I could help my team score goals and win by reading the pitch, organizing and playing from the center-back position. Playing in the middle allows me to take on a leadership role by giving me a view of the pitch that my attacking teammates can’t see. I support them by helping them see what they don’t see by reading the pitch and communicating it. Being there and supporting my teammates is my favorite part. It’s an incredible feeling to see it all come together on the pitch.
What makes this team special
âThis year we are unbeaten so far, 5-0. We have not yet reached our full potential, but we continue to train and work on our weak spots in order to reach the US bank this year. Our goal is for the entire high school to have two days off to come see us play at the Bank in November. We started this season with the main returning girls group winning our school’s first conference championship title in women’s soccer. This strong and experienced group of girls are looking to move beyond a conference title this year, and with even more promising younger athletes joining us, I hope we can continue to make progress towards our overall goal.
Something people might not realize about your sport
“I could take the easy route and just say ‘offside’, at least that’s the most popular topic I’m asked about anyway. However, I think a lot of people don’t realize how important fitness is. If you can’t run five kilometers in at least 25 minutes, you will be hard pressed to play an 80 minute soccer game. Almost everything a football player does is based on their level of fitness.
Best High School Football Memories
âMine should be from my junior year. It was 9 o’clock in the evening in Hinckley. Dairy Queen was about to close when our coach pulled into the parking lot for the girls to try and find food. However, everything except DQ was closed and they were not allowing anyone to enter the restaurant due to COVID rules. It took a while to convince, but after no cars had passed for a while, the employees finally allowed us to walk up to the window and order. So we all walked up to the drive-thru window, ordered ice cream for the ride home, and got back on the bus for the two hour drive home! “
