BOSTON, Mass .– America East has selected three River Hawks from the UMass Lowell men’s soccer team to honor All-Conference honors, as the league office reported Thursday morning.

First year students Kai mcloughlin (Dural, New South Wales) and Jonathan ferreira (Ashland, Mass.) Were named to the America East rookie squad, while the juniors Denis petro (Michalovce, Slovakia) got a nod to the All-Academic squad.

McLoughlin finished as the roster’s co-leader with four goals for UMass Lowell in the fall campaign. Three of the balls were scored in the River Hawks’ home game on Oct. 23, where the freshman won his first career hat trick in the first half of a 6-0 win over Hartford. The performance caught the attention of the league office as he was named rookie and offensive player of the week two days later.

Equally impressive in his debut season, Ferreira finished the year with four assists and one goal, earning him six points in 15 appearances. The Ashland native contributed scores against Yale, Massachusetts and Hartford, and scored the River Hawks’ lone goal against UAlbany on October 13. The forward also spent more time on the pitch than any other freshman, with 686 minutes of action.

“I am happy to see several of our guys receiving recognition around the conference,” said head coach Christian Figueroa. “With the young group that we have, it’s a shame that the season is so short, because Kai and Jonathan were starting to assert themselves.”

Petro has had his fair share of success both in the field and in his honors studies in exercise science. In class, his dedication to his academics earned him a cumulative GPA of 3.92, the fourth highest among All-Academic team selections. On the pitch, he was a full-back who started all 16 games as a vocal leader throughout the fall.

“Denis continues to be an example of what a student-athlete should be,” Figueroa said. “His constant work in the field and in the classroom shows the type of person he is, and we are fortunate to have someone like Denis on our program.”
