The Philadelphia Union “Boot Room” is the heart and soul of this football club

CHESTER, Pa. (WPVI) — Baseball players use bats. Hockey players use sticks. Golfers use clubs.

But for football players, their scoring method is self-evident. And as you can imagine, they take it very seriously.

Union midfielder Alejandro Bedoya puts it simply: “The most important piece of equipment we wear – the boots.”

What the rest of the world calls cleats, football players call them “boots”.

The boots are so essential to Union’s success that the team have a place in their Chester training complex dedicated to them. It’s called the “Boot Room” and it houses dozens of pairs of different sizes and colors.

Brandon Comisky is the Director of Equipment Operations for Union. He oversees everything from uniforms to balls and every pair of boots.

“Boots are the most important part of what guys wear every day,” Comisky says. “Besides the uniform, boots are essential in everything we do.”

Each pair is different and Comisky customizes them to each player’s preferences. “The most important thing is to know the players, to know what they like,” says Comisky.

The Boot Room also has a feature that you cannot see.

“The coolest thing about the room is the distinct smell in there,” Comiskey tells us.

Bedoya agrees.

“It smells a bit. The different boots the guys are wearing, the dirty socks, the dirty shoes,” Bedoya said.

Comisky adds, “Thank goodness there’s a door because we can open it and just air it out.”
