Southeast heads to Mississippi State for exhibition contest

HAMMOND, Louisiana – The Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer team will see its first action of the 2022 season on Sunday with an exhibition game at 1 p.m. in Mississippi State.

Southeastern, which returns 18 letter winners from last season’s roster, will face an MSU team that finished 5-8-3 overall and 3-6-1 in Southeastern Conference play. Live stats, provided by the host Bulldogs, from Sunday’s game will be available via the football schedule page on

Freshman SLU Head Coach Nathan Gillespie has seen his Lady Lions grow since arriving on campus and can’t wait to see how that will translate against a formidable opponent.

“Our team is starting to understand how we want to play,” commented Gillespie. “We are really starting to understand our strategies and tactics and Sunday will be a good test to see where we are as a team and how our newcomers fit in.”

With the regular season opener less than a week away, Gillespie is looking for several things from his Southeast team.

“We’ll have a much better idea of what we still need to work on and what we’re doing well that we can build on,” Gillespie said. “We would like to have a strong defensive effort and gain confidence as we head into the start of the season.”

Mississippi State not only has the home field advantage, but has the advantage of having already played an exhibition game. MSU handed Samford a 2-0 loss on Thursday night, scoring twice in the closing minutes to secure the shutout victory.

Southeastern will officially open the 2022 season with a contest at 7 p.m. on August 18 at Ole Miss.
