Silver Lining: Football shows best defense in 13 years – Davie County Enterprise Record
By Brian Pitts
Although Davie’s football team’s losing streak has increased in the past week, there is a smiling face you can hang on to the War Eagles. They don’t get bullied in the Central Piedmont Conference because they’re playing the best defense we’ve seen in 13 years.
In 12 games, not once have they allowed more than four goals, and they’ve only allowed four twice. The last time a Davie team went this long without giving up four in a game was Pete Gustafson’s team in 2009 which went 16 straight games with four or fewer allowed. This team allowed 20 goals in the first 12 games; Corbin Kopetzky’s War Eagles have surrendered just 19, or 1.5 per game.
A lack of goals sent Davie (3-7-2 on aggregate) into a six-game freefall. Valiant efforts failed when Davie lost 4-0 to West Forsyth on April 4 and 3-0 to Reagan on April 7.
“We were short of a starter (defender Emily Garner against Reagan),” Kopetzky said. “We came out a bit rocky (and trailed 2-0 at halftime), but we picked it up from there. We moved the ball quite well. We had a few looks; they just didn’t fall in love with us.
And then: “They work hard. They are improving. We stay in tight games and try to shake things up.
Kopetzky beamed with pride in front of his three freshmen – Sarah Andrade, Cat Rosser and Jaden Sink.
“I mixed everyone up a bit between midfield and defense (with Garner out),” he said. “I threw Sarah upstairs. She has been very impressive this season. She did exactly what I needed her to. She played a really good game and had a shot that I thought she was going to fall in love with.
“I’ve replaced Cat a lot. Just like Sarah, she’s stepped it up. I tell her what I need and she’s exactly where she needs to be at all times. When Sarah, Cat and Jaden step onto the court , it’s hard to tell they’re freshmen, so I’m excited to see what they’ll be like as juniors and seniors.
