Rockford’s Sportscore Two a busy place again after pandemic

LOVES PARK, Ill. (WTVO / WQRF) – Summer has always been synonymous with many youth sports tournaments in Rockford. That changed last year when everything was shut down by COVID, but this weekend things were back to normal.

Mercyhealth Sportscore Two in Loves Park is packed with activities. Three events are taking place there this weekend.

“We are really excited to see some action happening at our facility,” said Sportscore Two General Manager Louis Mateus. “Especially with all the events, the non-events that we had in the last year.”

There’s the JP Sports Baseball Tournament, the Youth American Football Olympic Development Program event, as well as lacrosse with the Team Illinois Showcase and Invitational Tournament. Several college coaches from the Midwest are here to experience the talent of lacrosse.

“We’re giving kids the opportunity to step out in front of college coaches and give them the opportunity to play NCAA lacrosse,” said Team Illinois Showcase director Kevin Benages.

200 athletes were in the lacrosse showcase on Friday. The tournament will have more than 50 teams.

The Olympic Soccer Development Program event is a Midwestern regional event.

“These are kids who were selected in their states, 12 Midwestern states were selected to be here,” Mateus said. “These young people are trying to be part of the national teams. All of these children aspire to one day, hopefully, represent our country. “

Mercyhealth Sportscore Two started out with football as its primary sport, but the vision has always been to make Sportscore Two the scene for a variety of sports. We see that this weekend.
