Pedro Benito, former Gardner-Webb men’s football pupil, makes his La Liga debut for Cádiz football club


Cadiz, Spain – Former Gardner-Webb men’s soccer player Pedro Benito made his La Liga debut on Saturday, October 2sd for Cádiz FC, a Spanish professional football club located in Cadiz, Spain, as they faced Valencia at home in the Nuevo Mirandilla stadium.

“Pedro grew up in Cadiz, Spain and his father played there. It’s a lifelong dream come true,” said the head coach. Tony setzer, who coached Beinto for a season in 2019. “We were thrilled that Pedro was going through Gardner-Webb, but even more excited for his future and what’s to come.”

The former Runnin ‘Bulldog forward officially entered the game in the 60e minute, as Benito replaced Alvaro Negredo and played the remaining 30. While Valencia held him in check without a shot being allowed, Benito still managed to apply pressure and shot three fouls in the day.

“Pedro is an exceptional young man, during his time at Gardner-Webb he was one of our top scorers,” Setzer continued. “He was a very dynamic player on the pitch. Pedro was always working diligently to perfect his art, and it shows his success today. I’m so delighted that Pedro is making his first La Liga appearance – it’s just an accomplishment impressive. I pay tribute to Pedro for his work ethic and it was just a privilege to work with him. “

During Benito’s time with Gardner-Webb, the powerful forward played 19 games and started all but two, registering five goals and three assists for a total of 13 points. During the 2019 campaign at GWU, Benito won both All-State NCSIA Second Team and All-Big South Second Team honors.

In December 2020, Benito graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Gardner-Webb University.
