MEN’S SOCCER SCORES FIVE GOALS IN A VICTORY AGAINST ASSUMPTION
Syracuse, NY – The Le Moyne College men’s soccer team rebounded from an overtime loss Wednesday with a convincing 5-0 victory over Northeast-10 Conference opponent Assumption University at Ted Grant Field on Saturday afternoon. The dolphins received scoring contributions from Noah Sperduto (Elmira, NY / Elmira), Brett stern (Lockport, NY / Newfane / Duquesne), Michael sparkes (Glasgow, Scotland / St. Ninians), and two goals of Robert Rohrhirsch (Garching bei MÃ¼nchen, Germany / Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium Garching / University of Applied Sciences Munich) to take the win and move to 6-3 (3-3 NE10) this season.
In the eighth minute of the match Jack goodrich (Kellsall, England / King’s School Chester) sent a center from the left sideline over the jump Joe falcone (Manlius, NY / Fayetteville-Manlius) and to the back post, where Sperduto directed the ball from the back legs of the Assumption defender challenging Falcone and into the back of the net to give Le Moyne an early 1-0 lead.
About two minutes later, center-back Le Moyne Patrick strauss (Lakewood, Ohio / Saint-Ignace) sent a long pass to Stern in midfield. Stern, with a man on his back, steered him towards Falcone, turned to his left and began to sprint on the right wing. Falcone played it to Sperduto coming back to the ball. Sperduto, with his back to goal and a defender behind him, sent the ball to his left with his right foot in the path of Stern, who rushed towards the goal and entering the Greyhounds’ penalty area snatched a shot on the ground with his right foot which slipped between the legs of the Assumption goalkeeper to give the Dolphins a 2-0 lead with 35 minutes remaining in the first half.
Le Moyne increased their lead to 3-0 in the 14th minute when Sparkes recovered the ball from the left sideline and sprinted into Le Moyne’s third forward, dribbling to the 18-yard penalty area before shoot with his right foot which slipped between the goalkeeper and the near post and made waves at the back of the net.
With 30 seconds to go in the first half, Stern stole the ball into midfield and found Sparkes sprinting down the left wing. Sparkes made a move to his left in front of his defenseman, who had no choice but to foul the first-year forward just outside the Greyhounds’ penalty area. Free kick awarded in a dangerous spot, Goodrich and Rohrhirsch stood behind the ball. Goodrich passed him, letting Rohrhirsch hit him. The graduate student stepped in and sent a strike with his right foot jumping through the floor in the lower right corner of the net to give Le Moyne a 4-0 advantage before half-time.
In the 65th minute redshirt-junior defender Josh doback (Baldwinsville, NY / CW Baker) passed the ball to Owen Bauer (Baldwinsville, NY / CW Baker / UNC Asheville) on the left side of Le Moyne attacking the third. Bauer dribbled to his right and about 30 yards from goal, passed over the Assumption defense to the far post and over the foot of Rohrhirsch, who deftly returned the ball and pushed it. in front of a rear defender and Assomption goalkeeper Goerge Dixon. IV at the back of the net to give the Dolphins their fifth goal of the afternoon.
The Keeper of Moyne Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, NY / Fayetteville-Manlius) made six saves for the Dolphins and had his fourth clean sheet of the season.
The Le Moyne College men’s soccer team will travel to Erie, Pa. On Tuesday, October 12 to face Mercyhurst University at 1 p.m.
