Men’s soccer announces 2022 fall schedule

HUNTINGTON, West Virginia – The Marshall Men’s Soccer Team released its fall 2022 schedule for its first season in the Sun Belt Conference on Friday. The Herd will host eight regular season games at Hoops Family Field.

The Thundering Herd just completed their third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2021. Marshall’s schedule includes six opponents with double-digit wins last season and four programs that played in the NCAA Tournament. Herd opponents have collectively won 127 games in 2021.

Season tickets go on sale July 1. Single game tickets, if available, will go on sale August 1st. Season ticket purchases will include one ticket for each men’s and women’s game. More information can be found by clicking here on the Marshall Men’s Football Ticket Page.

“The schedule for the past few years has been absolutely crazy with the pandemic and then the conference realignment,” the Herd head coach said. Chris Grassi who is entering his sixth season at the helm. “But, we are happy to announce our 2022 schedule, and we believe it has some great games for our fans.

“We have eight home games, not including pre-season, and we have some top-notch fixtures for our fans to enjoy. Our target, as always, is to win the domestic league, and we believe our 2022 schedule will allow us to place in the perfect position to do it while we play. Marshall starts the year with three exhibition matches, one at home and two on the road. The first is a road contest in Rio Grande (August 12). The Red Storm won their conference championship and qualified for the NAIA National Tournament in 2021. The Herd will next face Radford at home (August 14) with the final road exhibition game against Maryland (August 19) . The Terrapins also qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2021.

The regular season officially begins at Hoops Family Field on August 25 against VCU at 7:15 p.m. Marshall’s other non-conference home games are against Pittsburgh (September 2), Pacific (September 11) and Robert Morris (October 4). ). Pitt won 13 games last season and saw his season end in the NCAA Quarterfinals against Notre Dame losing 4-2 on penalties.

The Herd’s non-conference road games will be at Butler (August 29), Cleveland State (September 7) and Wright State (October 26). Cleveland State has won 10 contests and lost to Oakland in the Horizon League Championship in 2021.

Marshall’s first season in the Sun Belt Conference will feature familiar teams the Herd have faced many times in the past. Kentucky, South Carolina and Old Dominion all left Conference USA to join the Sun Belt this season. Coastal Carolina and West Virginia are also part of the Sun Belt after joining C-USA last season as a member of men’s soccer. The Chanticleers were already in the Sun Belt but are now returning with their men’s soccer program as the league brought the sport back this season with many members. Georgia State and Georgia Southern return to the Sun Belt after participating in the Mid-American Conference, and James Madison leaves the Colonial Athletic Association.

The Herd opens the 2022 Sun Belt action on the road in Kentucky on September 16. The other road conference games will be at Coastal Carolina (September 30), South Carolina (October 8) and Georgia State (October 19). Kentucky won the 2021 Conference USA Championship and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to No. 8 seed Clemson. Georgia State won 13 games a year ago and beat Charlotte in the NCAA Tournament before falling to No. 3 seed Georgetown.

Marshall’s first home conference contest will be against WVU on Sept. 24 at Hoops Family Field. The two state rivals met last season in Huntington with a record crowd of 3,033. The fans were treated to a great game as the teams played out an exciting 2-2 draw. Both teams were ranked in the top 25 throughout the season. The Mountaineers lost to No. 3 seed Georgetown, 4-1 over PK, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament last season.

The Herd’s other home conference games are against Old Dominion (October 15), Georgia Southern (October 23), and James Madison (November 1) to close out the regular season. JMU have won 11 games in 2021.

The Sun Belt Conference Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 14-20 with a location yet to be determined.

Marshall will feature some new faces this fall, but still seems to have a strong team. The Herd won the College Spring League championship in April with a 2-1 win over Bowling Green. Vinicius Fernandes was named MVP and Olivier Semmlé won the Gold Glove award. Other key returns for the herd this season are Milo Yosef, Collin Mocyunas, Ibrahima Diop, Gabriel Alves, Joao SouzaAlex Adjetey and mohamed seidou.
