Men’s soccer adds 10 players to 2022 roster

PHILADELPHIA CREAM – Drexel Men’s Soccer Head Coach Michael Marchiano finalized the roster ahead of the fall 2022 season. The Dragons will add a 10-man recruiting class to team with 16 returnings starting in 2021. The young men included in this class are Dominique Bachstein, Raphael Bartell, Alessandro Capogna, Christian combs, Josh Dubost, Antonio Illuminato, Josh Pulla, Josh SolomonGiancarlo Vaccaro and Ben Weller.

“First of all, I want to thank our staff for putting this new class of Dragons back together, especially Flo Liu who led the effort,” Marchiano said. “We lost a significant group after last season and those shoes will be tough to fill, but there is a big opportunity in this next chapter for our players. Our returning players and newcomers, as well as the coaching staff, are working hard to ensure we continue strong progress over the past two seasons. Although full of hungry and attacking players, this is a class that caters to every positional unit and will also provide the desired mix of youth and experience. We look forward to working with all of these guys and are excited to bring them into a strong group of returning veterans.”

Dominique Bachstein | Transfer | Malvern, Pennsylvania | Conestoga High School
Bachstein, a junior transfer from City 6 rival La Salle, Bachstein joins the Drexel Dragons with 18 games played in the NCAA. The Malvern, Pa., native appeared in 15 games last season for the Explorers and scored his first career goal against UMBC on Sept. 3. Prior to La Salle, Bachstein played with FC Delco Academy.

Raphael Bartell | Guardian | Rostock, Germany | Poelchau Sportschule-im-Olympiapark
Bertell, a first-year goalkeeper from Berlin, Germany, spent his youth career with Hansa Rostock and Hertha BSC. In 2018-19, Bartell came second for the U17 Bundesliga and won third place for the U19 team in 2019-20. Bartell was the first-choice Regionalliga North goalkeeper for Heider SV in the 2021-22 season.

Alessandro Capogna | Guardian | Boville Ernica, Italy | IIS Brunelleschi – Leonardo da Vinci
Capogna joins the Dragons as a junior transfer from Universita di Cassino in Cassino, Italy. Prior to his time at the Universita di Cassino, Capogna graduated from IIS Brunelleschi Da Vinci High School. Capogna competed in Serie D for SSD Insieme Formia, as a starting goalkeeper at the top amateur level in Italy.

Christian combs | Transfer | North Wales, Pennsylvania | Germantown Academy
As a product of Germantown Academy, Combs was a four-year player for the varsity football team while also playing for Sporting PA-Radnor 03. He was voted Inter-AC Player of the Year 2021 and was capped three times in all leagues. . The freshman also won the 2019 and 2022 Germantown Academy Alumni Society Football Most Valuable Player awards.

Josh Dubost | Defender | Collegeville, Pennsylvania | Methacton High School
Dubost joins the Dragons after earning his bachelor’s degree from High Point University. The Collegeville, Pennsylvania native had one goal and two assists in 43 games for the Panthers and received Big South All-Conference honors as a junior. The transfer of graduates has won the Millis Scholar-Athlete Award three times. Prior to his time at High Point, Dubost played club soccer for FC Delco Development Academy and was ranked the No. 28 player in Pennsylvania by Top Drawer Soccer.

Antonio Illuminato | Midfielder | Cardito, Italy | University Telematica Pegaso
A graduate of Telematica Pegaso University, Illuminato brings valuable international experience to West Philadelphia. Illuminato is a graduate of the prestigious SSC Napoli Academy and featured in the UEFA Youth Champions League against Liverpool FC and Paris St.Germain. Moreover, Illuminato has played over 3,000 minutes and 35 games in Serie D combined for Portici and Alto Casertano.

Josh Pulla | Transfer | Vaughan, ON | Saint Joan of Arc
Pulla, a transfer from St. Bonaventure, is no stranger to NCAA Division I soccer. The junior made 39 appearances, scoring nine goals and seven assists for the Bonnies. Prior to his time at Saint-Bonaventure, Pulla was a member of the Ontario Cup championship team and the CSL Cup championship team in 2018 with Vaughan Azzurri, under coach Patrice Gheisar. and Shondell Busby.

Josh Solomon | Transfer | Toronto, ON | Crestwood Preparatory College
Solomon is a transfer from Wisconsin Green Bay. He has been a Dragon since the spring of 2022. Prior to playing in college, Solomon was a member of Vaughan Azzurri, playing under coach Patrice Gheisar and Shondell Busby. Prior to Vaughan, he spent time with the Toronto FC Academy.

Giancarlo Vaccaro | Transfer | Toronto, Ontario | Dante Aligheri Academy
Vaccaro is a transfer from the University of Connecticut. He started every game as a rookie in the 2020-21 season and had 21 appearances as a winger for the Huskies. Vaccaro also played two seasons under head coach Mauro Ongaro at Dante Aligheri Academy. Won the Athlete of the Year award in his freshman year. Registration two seasons in athletics. Named Male Track Athlete of the Year in his freshman year. Played club soccer with Vaughan Azzurri, playing under coach Patrice Gheisar and Shondell Busby.

Ben Weller | Transfer | Westminster, Maryland | Winters Mill Secondary School
Weller was a four-year member of the Winters Mill High School football team and was named Carroll County Player of the Year with All-County honor in all four years. Besides, he also played club football with FC Frederick.
