Creighton returns to league play with a midweek game against DePaul.

Scouting Creighton (3-4-1, 0-2-0 BE)
The Bluejays return to the BIG EAST after recording two non-conference shutouts last week.

Senior goalkeeper Paul Kruse has started all eight games and has three shutouts in total (two individuals, one combined) and ranks second in the BIG EAST in saves per game (4.12). He won the league goalie of the week title after posting two clean sheets last week.

Kruse made eight saves – one of his career high – in the season opener (Aug.26) against Tulsa before having to make seven saves on Aug.29 in Saint Louis. He also scored five against the top-ranked Hoyas in the Bluejays’ final home game on September 18.

Senior Diego Gutierrez leads the Bluejays with nine points on four goals and an assist. The reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year is tied for fifth in the league in goals.

First-year student Manu Toledano holds three goals for the Bluejays, while four other Bluejays have found the back of the net once.

Charles Augustus and Dominique briggs are tied for the team lead with two assists.

The Head Coach Johnny torres is in his third year at the helm of the Bluejays after spending 12 years as an assistant coach.

Scouting DePaul (5-4-0, 1-1-0 BE)
The Blue Demons enter the week on a two-game losing streak.

DePaul’s last victory came against UConn (2-1) on September 25.

Marek Gonda pace the team with 10 points (4 goals, 2 assists), while Jack richards has nine points on four goals and an assist.

Jake fuderer leads the team with three assists.

Gandhi-Cruz was the only DePaul goaltender to play this season. Cruz has a 1.33 goals against average and leads the BIG EAST with 38 saves.

The Head Coach Marc Plotkin is in his third season at the helm of DePaul.

History of the series against the blue demons
Creighton leads the all-time series against DePaul 11-1.

The Bluejays won the first 10 meetings between the two programs before the Blue Demons secured a 2-1 victory last season in Chicago (March 13).

Creighton defeated DePaul, 4-3, on April 2 in Omaha as the two teams have met twice during the regular season due to the league’s altered schedule due to COVID-19.

Consecutive closures for the first time in three years

Creighton recorded shutouts against UNO and UIC last week, marking the first time the Bluejays have recorded consecutive shutouts since September 2018.

Creighton earned shutouts in three straight games from September 7-22, 2018 against Memphis, Butler and Villanova.

The Bluejays have three shutouts in total this season.

Creighton only had one clean sheet in the 2020 season and three in 2019.

Kruse named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week

Senior goalkeeper Paul Kruse won the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week title, the league announced Monday afternoon.

The Heilbronn, Germany native helped the Bluejays register two shutouts last week against UNO (September 29) and UIC (October 2). Kruse got the solo clean sheet on Wednesday before winning a combined shutout on Saturday. Overall during his career at Creighton, Kruse has claimed 10 individual shutouts and a combined clean sheet.

The senior co-captain made four saves Wednesday in Creighton’s 1-0 win over the Mavericks and didn’t need to stop for 62 minutes of action as the Bluejays won 4-0 against the Mavericks. the Flames.

Kruse has a 1.39 goals-against average this season in 712 minutes played this season and ranks second in the BIG EAST with 4.13 saves per game. He also won the League’s Weekly Award following the Bluejays’ 3-0 shutout against then-number one Indiana on September 3.

Senior Diego Gutierrez claimed a spot on the weekly honor. The Omaha native had five points on two goals and one assist last week, including the game winner against former school and downtown rival UNO on Wednesday night. Gutierrez leads the Bluejays this season with nine points (four goals, one assist).

Pointing surge calms the flames
The Bluejays have scored just seven goals in the first seven games before finding the back of the net four times in total against UIC on Saturday night.

Creighton also scored three first-half goals against the Flames, the most in a single half by the Bluejays since he scored three in the first half against DePaul last season (April 2) .

The last time Creighton scored four or more goals in consecutive games was in 2017, when the team won a 6-1 win over Drake before a 4-1 win over Xavier.

Four different players scored goals in Saturday’s game against UIC and a total of seven different Bluejays scored at least one point.

Battle tested bluejays
Creighton is 3-4-1 this season, but the eight teams the Bluejays have faced so far this fall are 48-17-10 combined.

Of the first eight teams Creighton has faced this season, three are still undefeated (# 1 Georgetown, # 7 Tulsa, # 15 Saint Louis – Sept. 28 United Soccer Coaches rankings).

Mark the success of the first yields
The team that scored the first goal in 20 of Creighton’s last 21 games was victorious (the only exception was the 1-1 (2OT) draw against Ohio State on September 6).

The Bluejays are 3-0 this season when they score first and 0-4-1 when the opposition finds the back of the net first.

Creighton finished 6-0 in the 2020 season when he scored first, but 0-6 when his opponent scored first.

Creighton’s last victory came in the 2019 regular season finale against Butler.

The Bluejays’ last halftime victory came on September 24, 2019 against Tulsa as Creighton fell 1-0 at halftime before winning 4-3 in overtime.

Since Torres took over ahead of the 2019 season, the Bluejays have won just one win after falling behind at halftime (1-8-2).

Bluejays during BIG EAST road matches
Since joining BIG EAST prior to the 2013 season, the Bluejays are 16-16-5 in regular-season road championship games.

Creighton went 2-2 in road championship games last season (during the spring semester) and 1-3-1 in 2019.

The Bluejays are 0-1-0 this season in BIG EAST road competitions.
