JJ Barea is in talks to reunite with former teammate Jason Kidd on the Dallas Mavericks coaching staff.

On Friday, the team reached a verbal deal with Kidd to fill the head coach position left vacant by Rick Carlisle.

“JJ Barea had a preliminary conversation with former teammate Jason Kidd about joining his coaching staff in Dallas, sources told ESPN,” NBA insider MacMahon said on Twitter. “Barea has strong relationships across the organization, including Luka Doncic, and the Mavs missed his presence last season.”

The Mavs gave up on Barea in December 2020 and he signed to play with Estudiantes in Spain.

Kidd and, potentially, Barea aren’t the only members of the 2011 Championship squad to return to the organization. Preston Hollow’s neighbor Dirk Nowitzki joined last week as a special adviser.
