Football wins C-USA tournament spot
RUSTON, Louisiana – The North Texas soccer team won three crucial road points on Friday night with a 2-1 victory at Louisiana Tech and in so doing nabbed a berth in the United States Championship of the 2021 conference in November.
The Mean Green (8-4-3, 3-3-1) scored two goals in the second half on Friday to beat the Lady Bulldogs. Junior Allie Byrd scored just after half-time in the 48th minute from a corner from a Taylor tufts to help. It was his league that led 10th this season.
Then on time, Madi Drenowatz gave UNT the lead over LA Tech 5-8-3, 1-4-2) with his eighth goal of the season.
The Mean Green has hung on to beat the Lady Bulldogs for a spot in the upcoming conference tournament in Boca Raton, Fla.
“I will say LA Tech is as good if not better than any team we’ve played in conference with this fall,” said North Texas head coach John hedlund. “Steve did a great job in a very short period of time and the future is very bright for LA Tech. I’m also very proud of my players, we lost a goal at halftime and we changed some things and my team really responded with a great performance in the second half to secure the 2-1 victory. North Texas was back in action Thursday night when it hosted Rice for the last regular season game of the year. UNT will honor its three seniors Olivia klein, Steph Starr, Hanna banks and Connor barker.
