Football set to kick off 2022 campaign with two home games
Kent, Ohio- The Kent State women’s soccer team is set to begin its 2022 season this week against two Horizon League opponents, hosting Cleveland State Thursday at 7 p.m. and Oakland at 1 p.m. Sunday, with both games being played at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium.
The head coach Rob MarinaroThe team, which is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the program’s inaugural season, is aiming for another championship appearance in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. senior red shirt Tianna Harris, the 2021 MAC Defensive Player of the Year, will pave the way for the Golden Flashes after being named to United Soccer Coaches’ list of pre-season players to watch. senior goalkeeper Sarah Melen will help anchor the Flashes defense, while sophomore Harris Alisa Arthurjunior Giulia Giovinazziand junior Callie Cunningham will seek to propel the offensive attack forward.
Kent State is chosen to finish 4th in the MAC Women’s Soccer Preseason Poll, receiving two votes to end the year as conference tournament champions. The preseason poll is chosen after tabulating votes from the conference’s 12 head coaches.
Cleveland State finished the 2021 season with a 6-11-2 record, finishing fifth in the Horizon League. Junior midfielder Kathryn Ramicone returns as the Vikings’ top scorer from 2021, tallying two goals and one assist in 13 appearances. Last season, the Flashes outscored Cleveland State 2-0 in the regular season opener.
Oakland opens play this fall after going 11-9-1 last year, including a conference record 9-1-1. Midfielders Jayna Frasier and Karabo Dhlamini return as the Golden Grizzlies’ offensive leaders. Last September, the Flashes won a thriller 3-2 against the Grizzlies in Michigan.
