Coyotes Head to Minnesota – University of South Dakota Athletics

VERMILLION, SD – South Dakota found out their destination for the first round of the NCAA volleyball tournament on Sunday’s selection show.

The Coyotes, the Summit League tournament champions for the third time in four seasons, are heading to the Minneapolis area where they will face Minnesota in a first round game Friday night at 7 p.m.

South Dakota, after beating Omaha in straight sets in the Summit League title game, will be 20-9 in the opener.

“We are really delighted with this draw! »Coach Leanne Williamson noted. “There is a certain familiarity with this program and we have a lot of respect for this coaching staff.”

Minnesota, the No. 12 national seed, is 20-8 overall and 15-5 in the Big Ten Conference game. The Gophers picked up four-set victories over Penn State and Maryland to close out the regular season.

South Dakota is led by eighth-grade head coach Leanne Williamson (163-75), who also spent five seasons as an assistant under Coyotes head coach Matt Houk. Houk is currently an assistant coach in Minnesota with Hugh McCutcheon’s team.

“We’re so excited to be at this point and to be able to continue our season,” said Williamson.

This will be the first-ever meeting between South Dakota and Minnesota, although the teams have played several times during the spring offseason which typically follows a normal fall season.

Stanford and Iowa State are the other two Minneapolis-area teams and will face off in Game One Friday inside the Maturi Pavilion.
