CIFSS Playoffs: Cabrillo Women’s Soccer Takes Road Playoff Victory | local sports
A winter sports team in the Lompoc Valley has had a particularly successful start to the post-season.
Cabrillo’s women’s soccer team traveled to Santa Paula on Saturday and picked up a victory over the Cardinals in the first round of the CIF Division 4 South Section Playoffs. Cabrillo won 2-0.
It was a surprise for the Conqistadores, who went on the road and upset with Santa Paula, who fell to 14-4-2 this season. The Cardinals were the Citrus Coast League champions.
The Conquistadores secured the No. 3 seed of a tough Channel League. The Conqs are now 12-10-5 on the season. They went 5-4-1 in the league in the 2021-22 season.
Cabrillo and his trainer Derrick Wong now have another tough challenge ahead. They will travel to take on the No. 3 seed in the division to take on El Rancho, who is 20-4-2 this season.
El Rancho had to work in their opening round game, edging Montclair 3-2 on Saturday. The Dons are the second seed in the Del Rio League and have won five straight games.
None of Lompoc High’s football or basketball teams made it to the CIF Southern Section playoffs during the winter sports season.
The Cabrillo girls’ soccer team and the Cabrillo boys’ basketball teams made the playoffs.
Cabrillo’s basketball team lost to Los Angeles Shalhevet 66-53 Friday in Los Angeles. The Conqs led 16-12 after the first quarter, but trailed 29-28 at halftime after Shalhevet beat them 17-12 in the second. Shalhevet led 47-43 after three quarters and retired in the fourth and put the game away with a 19-10 advantage in the final frame, advancing to the CIF-SS division. 3AA Playoffs.
Cabrillo went 11-11 on the season and 6-4 in the Channel League.
There are expected to be many more teams from the Lompoc Valley in the winter playoffs next school year as LUSD schools move into the CIF Central Section and the Central Coast Athletic Association, where they will face teams from Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo County Schools.
