Cal takes on Titans to start 2022

BERKELEY – Freshman Head Coach Leonard Griffin leads the California men’s soccer team in the season opener at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The Golden Bears then host Villanova on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Goldman Field in Edwards Stadium.

The game at Fullerton will air on ESPN+. Fans can also follow live scores from Thursday’s game here. Sunday’s game against the Wildcats will air on the Pac-12 Networks (both the National Pac-12 Network and the local Pac-12 Bay Area) with live stats available here. The Bears finished the preseason with a 3-0 record, capped by a 2-1 win over Pacific on Aug. 19 at Berkeley. Cal previously routed UC Riverside, 4-0, on Aug. 12 and beat Cal State Bakersfield, 1-0, on Aug. 14 in preseason road action.

Evan Davila and Nonso Adimabua led a comeback victory for Cal in its preseason finale last Friday, as the Golden Bears beat Pacific, 2-1, at Edwards Stadium.

All of the goals came within five minutes of the second half, starting with Samuel Saiz’s 54th-minute Pacific goal.

In the 57th minute, Adimabua captures a pass from Juan Martinez and split the ball through goalkeeper Eric Cotton from 15 yards out for the equalizer. At 58:15, Davila fired past Cotton from the flank to give the Bears a lead they would never give up.

Nonso Adimabua Named player to watch

new bear Nonso Adimabua earned the national accolade on August 16 when United Soccer Coaches named him to their list of 30 forwards to watch this season.

Adimabua, a junior transfer from San Francisco, played his freshman year at USF under Leonard Griffin. In the 2021 Spring Regular Season, Adimabua was named a WCC freshman and named to the All-WCC First Team after leading USF in points (11), goals (3) and assists (5) .

In the fall of 2021, the Asaba, Nigeria product led USF in points (11) and goals (5) and once again earned First Team All-WCC status. Also in his second season, Adimabua was named to the United Soccer Coaches West Region second team after finishing tied for third in shots on goal (17) in the WCC and finished fifth in shots (38), at tied for fifth in goals and ninth in points in the conference.

  • In the pre-season at Riverside, the striker Nate Carrasco scored a brace, including match winner and midfielders Jake Himelstein and Rohan Mc Eligot scored a goal each
  • Himelstein, on an assist from McEligot, scored the winning goal in Bakersfield

  • With Davila, the midfielder of 2022 could include Juan Martinez, Adrian Guzman and a host of other bears
  • Also back are senior Jack Singeryoung defender Wyatt Meyer and forward Shoei Honda, a sophomore; all three tied for last year’s team with three goals apiece
  • Other returning defenders include Singer, junior redshirt Tate Dolanfifth year senior Christian Gomez and sophomores Kevin Carmichael and santiago hopkins
  • This year’s front line could see a combination of Adimabua, Honda, Carrasco, Arman Samimififth year senior Jonathan Estrade and even the versatile Singer, who last season played at full-back, midfield and up front
  • Collin Travasosa redshirt junior, is the Bears’ most experienced goaltender, starting 14 of 20 games
  • The head coach Leonard Griffin returned to Cal in March 2022, after leading Grand Canyon to a 15-4-1 record and to the NCAA Tournament in fall 2021. UCLA alumnus (Class of 2005) and former Cal assistant coach in 2013, Griffin was part of the Bruins’ 2002 NCAA champion team.

  • Cal State Fullerton was 3-11-3 last fall
  • Midfielder Sebastian Cruz – who led the Titans with 17 points on seven goals and three assists last year – has been named to the Big West 2022 preseason all-conference team
  • Cruz – who also scored all of the Titans game-winning goals last season – won the 2021 Big West honorable mention
  • George Kuntz is in his ninth year as head coach of Cal State Fullerton
