Big 12 conference adds four new members

The Big 12 conference today announces that Brigham Young University, the University of Central Florida, the University of Cincinnati and the University of Houston will become members no later than the 2024-25 sport year.

This is the second time in the Conference’s 26-year history that new members have been added. Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas State, Kansas, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech have been members since the Big 12 began in 1996, with membership from TCU and Virginia- Western in 2011.

“The Presidents and Chancellors of the Big 12 entered this process with the sole purpose of strengthening and stabilizing the Conference,” noted Lawrence Schovanec, Chairman of the Big 12 Board of Trustees and President of Texas Tech University. “With the addition of these four traditionally rich institutions, we have put the Big 12 on the path to continued success. We look forward to having BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston under the Big 12 banner, both athletically and academically. “

Today’s actions complied with Big 12 Conference rule 1.5.2.b.3 requiring an affirmative vote by a qualified majority of directors, and were unanimously approved by all eight permanent members.

“Today’s vote solidifies the long-term trajectory of the Big 12 Conference,” said Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. “I applaud the efforts of our Presidents, Chancellors and Athletic Directors of our permanent members to consider and take this step swiftly. The addition of these four beautiful institutions ensures the continued success of the Big 12 at the highest levels of intercollegiate athletics competition. “

Founded in 1875, Brigham Young University is located in Provo, Utah. The campus is home to 33,181 undergraduate students, pursuing degrees in 186 majors. Athletically, the Cougars compete in 21 sports. They have won 12 all-time NCAA titles, claimed 296 conference championships; and hosted 1,385 All-Americans, a Heisman Trophy winner and 75 Olympians.

Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball. Her women’s sports are basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball. Cougars participate in all Big 12 sponsored sports except horseback riding, rowing and wrestling. The Big 12 sponsors all sports in which the Cougars participate, except men’s volleyball.

Located in Orlando, Florida, the University of Central Florida is a metropolitan research university founded in 1963. UCF is nationally recognized for its innovation, affordability, and for fostering social mobility. With approximately 70,000 students, 13 colleges and 230 degree programs, the university helps develop the skilled talent needed to advance the industry and solve society’s greatest challenges. In the 16 college sports sponsored by UCF, Knights teams have won a total of 148 conference championships. In 2017, his football team closed an unbeaten season with a Peach Bowl victory over Auburn. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, and tennis. Her women’s sports are basketball, cross country, golf, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Knights participate in all Big 12 sponsored sports except horseback riding, gymnastics, swimming, diving and wrestling. The Big 12 sponsors all sports in which the Knights participate, except men’s soccer.

The University of Cincinnati is a public research university with an enrollment of 46,798. Founded in 1819, UC offers 414 programs of study. During its history in track and field, Bearcat teams have combined to win 116 conference championships. The men’s basketball program has represented 41 conference titles and two national championships. Last season, the UC football team achieved a perfect record and a CFP No.8 ranking in a Peach Bowl meet with Georgia.

Cincinnati sponsors 18 college sports. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, and swimming and diving. Her women’s sports are basketball, cross country, golf, indoor track and field, lacrosse, outdoor track and field, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball. The Bearcats participate in all Big 12 sponsored sports except horseback riding, gymnastics, men’s tennis, rowing, softball and wrestling. The Big 12 sponsors all sports the Bearcats participate in, except women’s lacrosse.

Founded in 1927, the University of Houston is a Level I research institute, with more than 47,000 students enrolled in its 408 undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs. His athletic success includes 158 conference titles, 17 NCAA tag team champions, 1,059 All-Americans, 63 Olympians and a Heisman Trophy winner. Last season was marked by the men’s basketball team’s run to the Final Four.

Houston sponsors 17 college sports. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, soccer, golf, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field. Her women’s sports are basketball, cross country, golf, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball. Cougars participate in all Big 12 sponsored sports except horseback riding, gymnastics, men’s tennis, rowing and wrestling. The Big 12 sponsors all the sports in which the Cougars participate.

As of its 26th year, the Big 12 have produced more than 720 All-America academic caps and won National Championship team titles in 19 of its 23 sponsored sports. Its student-athletes and teams have combined for more than 700 individual NCAA titles and 69 national team championships.

As of July 1, 2025, the Big 12 Conference will include 12 universities – Baylor, BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, and West Virginia. The additions push the Big 12’s footprint from five states and 40.2 million people to eight states with more than 76.5 million people in total.
